Interview with Ben

JM: How long was your sentencing for?
Ben: I was sentenced to 90 days. I had already served 59 of those days when the plea agreement was reached and got credit for time served.

JM: Did you spend time in a holding cell after your sentencing? If so, what was that like? If you didn't where did they they take you instead?
Ben: The booking process takes at least two to three hours. There is one big holding cell that is approx 15X20 room with a toilet, and there are a lot of other inmates in there.

If you know somebody serving time in the Okaloosa County Jail in Crestview, Florida you are probably wondering what they are going through. Read real interviews from ex-inmates of the jail so you know what to expect.

Okaloosa County
Located in northwest Florida near the Gulf Coast Okaloosa County has a population of almost 200,000. The county is named after an Indian word meaning "Black Water." The county is a conservative pocket in an otherwise bipartisan state - George W. Bush carried 78% of the popular vote in the county and McCain carried 72%.

Telephones from the OKC
If you know somebody in jail you probably want to know when they will call you. Inmates have access to telephones between 8AM and 9PM. They will either call you collect or, when they have commissary privileges, they can buy phone cards out. A $20 phone card should allow for about five 15-minute calls.

You can visit an inmate in the jail one time a week for up to an hour. To find out when you can visit them you should call the jail - each pod has a different day that they are allowed a visit. The visit is done behind a glass wall (which is better than the video monitors that many jails are using now though it's obviously not as good as a contact visit).

Passing the Time
Most people think the worst part of jail are the conditions, the food, taking showers, etc. The truth is that while none of these things are particularly pleasant most inmates will agree that the worst part is the boredom. After the initial shock of being separated from your loved ones and family you quickly learn that the hardest part is just not going crazy from boredom.

In the Okaloosa County Jail at least there are a few things to keep you occupied - you can watch TV, play cards, play chess and play checkers. One of the more interesting things that inmates can do is help the sheriffs solve unsolved crimes - cards are handed out with summaries of unsolved cases and inmates can submit their tips. Arrests that result from the tips may qualify the inmates for cash rewards. The inmates refer to these as "snitch cards."
