Interview with Neil

JM: How long was your sentencing for?
Neil: I was sentenced to 10 days in this jail for the domestic violence.

JM: Did you spend time in a holding cell after your sentencing? If so, what was that like? If you didn't where did they they take you instead?
Neil: Yes, I spent time in a holding cell. It sucks. You are just sitting in a room. I've been in other pods including classification cells and in "the back" which is general population where everybody goes after classification.

If you find yourself or someone you love heading to jail in Kenton County, you may be wondering what to expect. The following information has been gathered through interviews of former inmates of this jail. To the left of the article are links that lead to the actual interviews that will give you some idea of what life is really like behind bars in Kenton County.

Court
Inmates attend most of their court hearings directly in the jail via a video monitor. Some inmates report that they never saw a judge in person during all their court proceedings due to the video court.

Phone Calls
Keeping in touch with family and friends while incarcerated is important to most inmates. In the Kenton County Jail, inmates have regular access to pay phones. Calls can be made either collect, or using a phone card purchased through the jail. Collect calls cost around 50 cents per minute.

Phone cards are sold in $5, $10 or $20 increments in the lobby of the jail from 8:30-4:30, Monday through Friday and during visitation on Saturday and Sunday. They are passed out to the inmates after 4pm on the day they are purchased, and if they are purchased after 4pm, they are passed given to the inmate the following day. Refunds can be obtained on unused phone cards, but not partially used ones. Visit the jail website for more information on how to obtain a refund.

Recreation
To pass the time during their jail stay, the jail provides inmates with some forms of recreation. Checkers and playing cards are available for inmate use, and are not too difficult to access. Televisions are available in each section of the jail, but don't expect to have a lot of say over what you will watch. Choosing the channel is highly competitive and is the cause of many of the conflicts between inmates. Inmates in this jail do not regularly get to go outside during their stay.

Food
Unfortunately, the food in this jail is not rated very highly. Former inmates say that having money on their books so they could buy alternate foods off commissary made their stay in this jail more bearable.
