Interview with Dave and Miss

JM: How long was your sentencing for?
Dave: 11 months in jail but I only served 90 days. If I had messed up probation I would have had to serve the entire sentence. Technically I only served 82 days because I did some classes that took a few days off the 90.

JM: Did you spend time in a holding cell after your sentencing? If so, what was that like? If you didn't where did they they take you instead?
Dave: I did spend time in a holding cell that is connected to the court. I stayed there for about 3 hours after I was sentenced. Right after that, I got searched and then went right to my cell at the jail. I did spend time in holding when I was arrested and put in for the weekend. There were a lot of people in there for being drunk or whatever. It wasn't too dangerous in there... I have heard stories about being in there with rapists and murderers while they waited to be transferred to other places. It wasn't overly crowded. Its not horrible but its not good... I couldn't shower while I was in there.
Miss: Yes, the holding cell is very gross. It smelly, and dirty, and had a toilet which is completely open for people to see. They only give you toilet paper that's it. And a blanket.. It's very uncomfortable.

If you or somebody you know is heading to the Isabella County Jail you probably want to know what to expect. The links on the left lead to interviews from ex-inmates of the Isabella County Jail who share information about what life inside the jail is really like.

Pretrial and Sentencing
In this court jurisdiction, if you are under the age of 25 years, it is possible that you could get a HYDA status on your conviction. This means that your criminal record will not publicly reflect your conviction if you successfully complete your sentence. If you do something to violate your sentence, such as violate probation, your HYDA status can be revoked and your conviction can be public record.

Correctional Officers
Ex-inmates have said that the correctional officers in this jail are generally fair and willing to listen to inmates. Although they can't fulfill every inmate request, they are approachable and willing to help when they can. If you are having a problem getting along with another inmate in your area, it is possible that the officers will change housing assignments if you let them know about the problem.

Time off for good behavior
Time off your sentence for good behavior is available in this jail. You can get one day off your sentence per week served if you don't cause problems while incarcerated. In addition, you can earn days off your sentence by participating in therapy groups that are offered.

Jail Layout
In Isabella County Jail, the general population inmates are housed in dorm type rooms that have 8 bunks (16 beds total). The jail is overcrowded so there are often 20 people housed in each area, with some people sleeping on the floor. Each dorm area has a phone, a toilet and a shower that is shared by all the inmates in that room.

Inmates with lower security classification are housed on the outer perimeter of the jail, while those with the highest security are in the inner parts of the facility.

Phone Calls
You can buy phone cards from commissary in this jail. The cost is a couple dollars per minute. To call collect you have to know a credit card number to charge, and the call is billed to that card instead of the person you are calling.
