Good Behavior

Interview with Victor

JM: Did you get off early based on good behavior?
Victor: No. I got off early based on the fact that I had a white co-defendant who, years later, received a lesser sentence for the same crime and so after much fighting in court and filing motion after motion, my judge finally saw fit to end my sentence.

JM: What is the most time off you can receive for good behavior?
Victor: The Alabama penal system does not grant good time for sentences exceeding 15 years, so I received none; just waited on parole which is not guaranteed, but is possible only after 1/3 of the sentence has been served.

JM: What types of actions do you need to avoid in order to get time off? Did you ever witness somebody losing time off for good behavior?
Victor: One needed to avoid situations where there was too much excitement (i.e. the sports area or idle chatter on the wight pile) because there was too much of a potential for harmless smack-talking being taken seriously. Avoid gambling because owing someone money in prison is always a source for potential violence, especially if they guy feels like you're taking too long in paying him and he perceives that you think he's weak. And yes, I did see guys losing time for good behavior for the very things I just disclosed above.
