Pre-sentencing

Interview with Andres

JM: Tell us about the pre-sentencing process:
Andres: I was arrested and checked into the jail. I then whiled away a couple of days C Block until my arraignment, which was 5 days later instead of the required 3. I was then unable to post bail because I had a hold on me due to North Carolina extradition requirements.

JM: Did you have police stop by your house for questioning? If not please give us details on how you came to be arrested.
Andres: No. I was caught by the Loss Prevention officer shoplifting at Wal Mart. His manager called the police, and the arrived to interview me. After their interview, I was arrested for shoplifting and taken to jail on the spot. I could not post bail, due to North Carolina extradition requirements.

JM: What was court like? Please give as many details as you recall.
Andres: I sat in a holding cell for a very long time. Everyone around me was getting called into the court room. I then didn't go to court, and went straight back to jail. I only found out why 2 days later, when my lawyer showed up at the jail. He told me that they weren't going to see me until North Carolina got ahold of me.

JM: What were your original charges? What did you end up being convicted of?
Andres: I was originally charged with misdemeanor theft and felony obstruction of justice.
