Telephones

Interview with Cami, Tombstone, Strawberry, Tonya, Jay, Fred, Alice and Patrick

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Cami: Yes, we had regular access.
Tombstone: yes,there are 2 pay-phones in each pod,you have to make collect calls,to your ppl who will accept them.
Strawberry: Yes we did
Tonya: Yes
Jay: The telephone was in the block so you could use it when they let you out of the cells but they were collect calls
Fred: Yes but they never worked right
Alice: as long as the phones were on we could use them however they were considered a priveledge
Patrick: yes, but they cost alot

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Cami: Collect call charges for outgoing calls.
Tombstone: Very high,local calls were a dollar a minute,& you couldn't stay on them for longer than 20 minutes
Strawberry: CRAZY...i mean it was outrageous
Tonya: Collect
Jay: It was about five dollars for fifteen minutes local calling and eight dollars for fifteen minutes out of town calling average inmate might spend fifteen or twenty dollars a week
Fred: It was being charged by the minute. My family spent around 75 dollars a week on phone calls
Alice: locally a phone call costs about 2 dollars a minute. some inmates spent up to probably 100 dollars a week easily
Patrick: about 10 dollars for 10 minute calls, calls are collect I would say 30 per inmate a week

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Cami: Nope, it was all collect.
Tombstone: No phone cards were allowed
Strawberry: NO they wont letcha have callin cards cause i am sure they make a nice profit on our phone calls
Tonya: No
Jay: No you could just call out
Fred: No we wasn't allowed to we had to call collect
Alice: no the phone system was based on the friends and family using a tel service that required a minimum of 25 dollars or no phone call
Patrick: no collect. All calls collect

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Cami: Yes, if they wanted to they could.
Tombstone: Yes, you were warned that they would
Strawberry: They did say they could if they wanted or needed to...but i dont know if they ever did for me...they may have...hell i wouldnt put it past em'
Tonya: Sure they did
Jay: The prompt on the phone said they did
Fred: Yes every call was screened
Alice: there was a recording that said all calls were subject to monitoring
Patrick: yes, it was recorded all the time.
