Inmates

Interview with Ed

JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't.
Ed: I didn't have a problem getting along with other inmates which was a surprise to me. I was nervous about entering jail because of movies and TV but FCC wasn't really like that. I also had friends in jail and also some family members.

JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates?
Ed: I didn't talk shit or disrespect others, which I don't do on the outside either. Most people are just trying to do their time and get past it. Also there aren't large street gangs in Fairbanks. Even though I was young I didn't have a problem and made some friends.

JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change?
Ed: I think you were able to pick your cellmate, but only after you were in for awhile. I think I had about 3 or 4 cellmates when I first went in. I had several cellmates at the half way house.
