JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time? Ron: TV. Nothing else... they didn't allow books
except you could have a bible. You could buy
paper on commissary and a flex pen (just the part
of the pen on the inside). I play music and write
songs for fun so I wrote songs. A few times the
deputies snuck in some books for us. Everybody
would fight over them. Candice: There are really no activities except you get to go to the rec
yard ehich is nothing but a slab of concrete where you can sit
out there and play basketball but most people just sit out
there and talk to each other because there is really nothing to
do Cliff: none. you would watch t.v work out or go out
side because thats all they had for us. and if
you didnt do that you just sat around unless you
were a trustee and they had more privalages and
were able to move around more freely than
everyone else could
JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details. Ron: See above. Candice: There are really no activities except you get to go to the rec
yard ehich is nothing but a slab of concrete where you can sit
out there and play basketball but most people just sit out
there and talk to each other because there is really nothing to
do Cliff: yes, every day we could watch tv but there was
times when some one wanted to watch one program
and some one else wanted to watch another and at
times it might get heated about what we would
watch. i once saw a fight break out about what
we would watch
JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail? Ron: I got in terrible shape while I was in jail.
There was no place to work out. For an hour a day
you go from the dayroom to a completely enclosed
room. There was a basketball hoop that was about
20 feet high on the brick wall. When you walked
out of the dayroom into the concrete outside area
it was closed by 30-40 ft concrete walls with a
black net covering it. Candice: really no activities except you get to go to the rec yard ehich is
nothing but a slab of concrete where you can sit out there and
play basketball but most people just sit out there and talk to
each other because there is really nothing to do Cliff: no because i worked out every night doing push
ups two nights on one night off. i started doing
five sets of five and worked my way up
JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise? Ron: 1 hour per day. Candice: really no activities except you get to go to the rec yard ehich is
nothing but a slab of concrete where you can sit out there and
play basketball but most people just sit out there and talk to
each other because there is really nothing to do Cliff: everyday. we just walked around, talked to each
other, worked out doing push ups, crunches and
other workout exercises. we would work out in
our cells
JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held? Ron: We had a minister come on Monday nights and
Saturday mornings. In between the exit doors of
the block there is a little meeting room, which
were used for attorney visits and chaplain visits.
The deputy would call "church call". Sometimes it
was just em and other times there were 3 or 4 of
us. We would do bible study. Candice: You have some people that come to perform church services
but they just come to the unit and talk for an hour Cliff: yes they were. im not sure because i didnt go to
any of them. i dont know where they were held
