Telephones

Interview with Ellen

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Ellen: Not unless we where out of lock down. But I was able to call at least every other day.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Ellen: My mom spent about 35-40 dollars a week on collect calls. Global telling is expensive which meant my mom cut me down from talking to my children.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Ellen: I didn't buy calling cards. I rarely had money on my books to afford them. I was able to by 1 and that one lasted for 1 call or 2 really fast ones

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Ellen: Yes they did. They knew when a 3 way was being done and I was told they are being recorded.
