Telephones

Interview with Richard and Donna

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Richard: There's a payphone there that you can use if you have money. You can only use it once a week.
Donna: We had access to the phones as long as it was not during lockdown or on a tues or thurs while they were transporting people to prison.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Richard: Phone calls cost 55 cents.
Donna: We had to call collect. My mom told me that for one phone call, which was 15 minutes long, it was almost 20 dollars.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Richard: No. If you have money on your books you use it. You could also call collect.
Donna: no we did not, we called collect

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Richard: No, they didn't ask who we were calling.
Donna: Yes they did, there was a recording that played every so often during the call that stated that it was being recorded and monitored.
