Leisure Time

Interview with Max

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Max: TV, books, church services. If you are general population post sentencing you can get a job inside the jail.

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Max: The officers always control when the TV goes on an off. The channels are controlled by the group of inmates who are assigned to clean that day. So about twice a week, your group will have a chance to choose. If your group doesn't agree on what you want to watch, sometimes you can buy their votes with candybars and things like that. Commissary items are like money in jail.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Max: Yes, I lost 20 lbs, which is a lot for me because I am not heavy. It's hard to work out there besides doing push ups and sit ups. The space is very limited.

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Max: Twice a week, if the officers let you, and for about 15 minutes at a time. "Outside" is a very small yard.

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Max: Yes, they have church services at least weekly. I'm not religious at all so I never attended but they did have them.
