Telephones

Interview with Erik and Clayton

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Erik: Yes.
Clayton: Yes. They were in the day room. We had access at least 2 hours each morning, and 2 hours each evening. If you work you have better access to the phone.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Erik: Four ten minute phone calls cost $20. So $5 for 10 minutes.
Clayton: You had to call collect. It was about $4.50 for a 5 minute call to San Francisco.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Erik: The only way you can call out is to buy a phone card for $20. You can make 4 calls with each calling card.
Clayton: They didn't have phone cards when I was there.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Erik: Yes, they will record your phone calls.
Clayton: Oh, definately.
