Telephones

Interview with Shawn, Tom, Linda, Margaret and Laura

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Shawn: Yes
Tom: During our exercise time, we were able to use the phones
Linda: We could only use the phones at certain times.
Margaret: I WOULDNT SAY REGULAR. MOSTLY WHEN THE GUARDS GAVE US OUR TIME OUTSIDE THE CELLS.
Laura: yes at certain alloted times though

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Shawn: The initial hook up charge and certain amount for each minute
Tom: If you didnt have a phone card, the call was collect. You could get the cards once a week through the commissary system.
Linda: The phones were expensive. I think the average inmate would spend like 30.00 a week on phone cards if they could afford it.
Margaret: COLLECT CALLS WERE THE ONLY TYPE ALLOWED. MY GUESS IS THE AVERAGE INMATE SPENDS LIKE $20-$30/WEEK ON PHONE CALLS.
Laura: You could either make collect calls or buy a prepaid phone card. I would say $25

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Shawn: Yes, to certain numbers and cell phones
Tom: I didnt do a lot of calling out. I purchased envelopes for writing.
Linda: You could buy phone cards or call collect.
Margaret: NO. IT WAS COLLECT CALLS ONLY.
Laura: that was one option, or you could make collect callls.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Shawn: yes
Tom: They did have a message before making calls saying that they could be screened.
Linda: yes the calls were screened.
Margaret: THEY SAID ON THE RECORDING THAT THEY DID.
Laura: There was a recording that came on at the beginning of each call saying that, but I dont know how true that was.
