Inmates

Interview with Rick

JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't.
Rick: I was a fifth timer so by the time I came into San Quentin I had coffee and cigarettes waiting for me. I had a friend on the inside that had a cell picked out for me.

JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates?
Rick: You need to mind your own busness, not be loud. Just be mutally respective to other people. One of my pet peevs was people starting in cell like they were taking inventory. I woulds say, "WTF are your looking at? Your boyfriend?" That bothered me.

JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change?
Rick: We worked our way into it... I moved in with one guy and he was moving on so my friend was going to come in. You had to get permission to do those kinds of things.
