Interview with John

JM: What clothes could you have brought in to wear in the jail (underwear, socks, etc.)?
John: None . It was all jail-issued . I have read that , at the lesser-security other men's jail in SCC , the Watsonville one that is nicknamed " The Farm " , you can have your own (non-gang colors) athletic shoes there (if you can afford them/get them sent to you) but I was not stationed there and you didn't ask me . My medical needs precluded any possible trasfer to the Farm even the staff said that I couldn't get as much medical care there .

JM: If you had a set uniform, what did it look like? Please be specific about each piece of clothing issued to you.
John: We had a - on the outside - standard all-orange one , orange pants , sort of a vest/heavier more poly shirt on the outside , a t-shirt below that , pants were - generally - long with some boxer shorts under that both were jail orange polyester-heavy , the underpants under that were more cotton(though with some poly) as were the underpants which were generic white/gray-ish/whatevs with no? jail stamp on it . The undershirt , over-shirt (with the one pocket and slight chest-showing dip) , boxers , and overpants - I always received - and preferred - long pants for the the top pants , i think , others had overpants that were shorter . The color description wasn't absolute maybe some older ones were still around - Anyway , above underwear and socks (pale brown)level , all clothes did bear a S.C. Jail stamp on them , I think they must have calculated the sizes to a level much larger going by official size than outside world clothes , I am XXL , maybe but not XXXXL which I sometimes IIRC ended up with ! We had backless " jail sandals " . Made in China . Figures...by " regular " cons like us or " political/religious/ " cons there ? One other con there saw that joke as well .

JM: Were there any assigned clothes in high demand that an inmate should look for when getting clothing assigned?
John: Um , I sort of liked the T-shirts , generally light brown/pale cotton (or cotton/poly) , which weree generally worn under more poly-ish kind of " overshirts " , jailhouse orange or similar , which had your one pocket and had chest drops , unlike the T-shirts ,

JM: Was the clothing different between men and women?
John: Probably slightly . I didn't really see the women .
