Telephones

Interview with John

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
John: Yes .

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
John: I'm not sure . I believe he only calls I made from jail that were ever completed were to an activist in Santa Cruz who makes a practice of accepting collect calls from jail , this man having a set account for collect calls at his number . Sometimes he accepted calls and sometimes he didn't . At all the times that I was arrested I had no cash on me and so never had any money in my account to pay for phone calls or comissary .

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
John: I guess you could try collect ones , so I suppose no . See above .

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
John: Calls out , you mean ??? I guess not , but if there was an eavesdrop on them somewhere I would not be suprised . I don't think that inmates could receive calls in the block if that's what you mean by " screening " one's calls .
