JM: How long was your sentencing for?
Tom: 22 days
Odessa: I have several but the last one was 2yrs.

JM: Did you spend time in a holding cell after your sentencing? If so, what was that like? If you didn't where did they they take you instead?
Tom: cell side lockd down a lot
Odessa: yes, it was terriable knowing you had to go back to county jail, or that you'd be going to a state prison foe any amount a time. you think of your family whats gonna happen now and whos goning to be by yourside while your down. It truly eats you up inside.

If you or someone you know is headed to Tehama County Jail, you may be wondering what it's like to serve time there. The more you know, the better you can prepare yourself for the experience.

The following information has been gathered through interviews with former inmates of Tehama County Jail. The links to the left will lead you to the actual interviews, where you can read about what life in this jail is really like.

Visitation
One thing that inmates look forward to the most during their time in jail are visits from loved ones. In Tehama County Jail, inmates are allowed visitors for 30 minute visits twice per week. Sometimes visits can be longer, but only when time allows.

Only one visitor can be in the visit at a time, unless one of your visitors is a minor. Multiple visitors can come to each visit, but they must visit you individually and split the time. Visits in this jail are non-contact, meaning there is a wall of glass physically separating the inmate from the visitor.

Meals
Inmates in this jail receive three meals a day, with no snacks; additional food may be purchased through commissary. Former inmates rate the food provided at mealtime very poorly. Having money on your books for commissary may be something you want to arrange to do if you can, so you can have options about what you will eat besides the standard meals served in Tehama County Jail.

Medical Care
To make a request for medical care, it is necessary for the inmate to turn in a medical care request slip. Ex-inmates say that it sometimes takes a long time to receive a response from the medical staff. Prescription and over the counter medications are administered four times daily.

A nurse comes around to the living areas with a med cart. If you make a medical request that takes awhile to get a response, you might want to try talking to a nurse that is bringing the daily meds. In case of a medical emergency, inmates are transported to St. Elizabeth's Hospital.
