Telephones

Interview with Jerry and Pat

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Jerry: The phones are turned on at 6 am and get shut off whenever the television does which is usually around 10 pm.
Pat: yes payphones on the wall with unlimited use

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Jerry: I called long distance and each 15 minute call was about $5. Most inmates use the phone at least once per week. Some use it every day. it all depends on who loves you.
Pat: Only collect calls cant call cell phones unless the person on the outside sets there phone up for it I believe it was between 5 an 10 bucks a phone call unless you bought a pre paid phone card on average probably 25 to 50 bucks a week if not more.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Jerry: You can buy phone cards or you can call collect or your people can connect a credit card to their number. If someone puts money on your books, you can buy a phone card. If you call someone, they can pay for the call with a credit card.
Pat: yes unless someone on the outside set there phone up to accept collect call or someone had a landline that could accept them.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Jerry: Generally if you are fighting a serious case, the DA can and will listen to your call and make sure you don't call anyone who is on a restraining order.
Pat: yes it tells you every 30 seconds and when you get your hand book that they can and do screen your calls
