Leisure Time

Interview with Louisa

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Louisa: They had a TV in there, but you can't hear it with all the women screaming and hollering. They had books, but you could also have them sent to you. My husband would purchase books and have them sent in to me. I worked in laundry and I sewed because no-one else knew how to use the machine. You could buy playing cards off canteen.

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Louisa: It was hard to watch TV because the inmates were so loud.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Louisa: Oh yeah, cause there is nothing to do and they serve you all these starchy food.

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Louisa: I went outside one time while I was there. A girl had a heatstroke so that cut it short. When you went out they left you out for about 2 hours.

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Louisa: They had church services, but you couldn't hear what was going on because people were talking. People went to church just so they could see their friends.
