Pre-sentencing

Interview with Hugh

JM: Tell us about the pre-sentencing process:
Hugh: When you go in you get first appearance in 7 days. On the 30th day you go for arraignment. They sentence you or let you go at that hearing.

JM: Did you have police stop by your house for questioning? If not please give us details on how you came to be arrested.
Hugh: I went to the jail to turn myself in. We got to the jail gate and the cop that we asked directions for arrested me. They won't let you turn yourself in unless you get to the door.

JM: What was court like? Please give as many details as you recall.
Hugh: Court is a joke. My public defender didn't know anything about my case. I had a piece of paper from my boss, recommending that he needed me to work. I gave it to my lawyer and he said he didn't need that. The public defender had nothing to say about my case. The Judge is pretty lenient. They would rather give you probation than anything.

JM: What were your original charges? What did you end up being convicted of?
Hugh: My original charge was a traffic violation, and I was convicted of the same.
