Leisure Time

Interview with Sonia

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Sonia: There was a room callled the multi purpose room where church services GED classes and a class called ELITE took place. There was a recreation room with 2 tables and open windows of sorts covered in chainlink fence at the top of the wall so that you could feel the outside tempature and see the sky. There was a computer screen that commisary was ordered on out in the Rec Room too.

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Sonia: No there was no entertainment at all. Bible Study Church Parenting Class GED and the ELITE class was it. I was so excited about the ELITE class the lady was going to help with job searches re-entry and suggestions for housing but she just stopped coming and doesnt reply to the email address she provided. It was a huge let down the newspaper even did a story about it

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Sonia: at first no I didnt I actually got in a little better shape there was ample room to exercise and the tempature was great for working out. It was when I was transported back to Duval I gained so much weight I need to lose 20 lbs

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Sonia: I explained about the outside rec room which wasnt really outside i think they were required to take us out there like 3 hours a day in Nassau Duval was alot better. I walked around the block for an hour or so a day and in my cell i did push ups sit ups lunges squats and stretched daily in Nassau In august when i was sent back to duval I stopped

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Sonia: I already answered these questions there were two services a week. one was a Bible study where we took turns reading and going over a work sheet one of the volunteers made for us to go along with the scripture that we were to study that week and the other was a service with someone preaching a sermon
