Closing Advice

Interview with Harry, Qtip, Hanna, DoneMyTime, Linda, Missy, Josh, Alex, Gary, Charlie, Melissa, Harley, Billy, Jimmy and Chrissy

JM: What else would you want a friend or family member to know if they have a loved one going to this jail?
Harry: Find someone that you can talk to on the outside. It gets really lonely being in jail with no one to talk to on the outside. Luckily I had a fiance to call daily that kept me in good spirits. If I had to serve over a month I really think I would have gone crazy.
Qtip: just make sure to talk to them write them or something jail gets loney....its nice to hear from people who care about you
Hanna: Don't go back once your out! Write a lot of letters while you are in. Use the time while you are in there to really think about your life and where it is going.. it is never too late to turn things around!
DoneMyTime: Pray to God and ask for forgivenss and guidance to a better life. Ask God for patience and keep you covered under the blood of Jesus for protection. You can't trick God and the Jailers..they are too experienced and know all tricks
Linda: CHECK ON YOUR LOVE ONES EVEN IF IT'S VIA LETTER. YOU HAVE GOOD AND BAD WORKING AT THE JAIL. IF THEY ARE HAVING PROBLEMS BEHIND BARS A QUIET SOUL NEVER IS HEARD.WRITE AN GRIEVENCE AGAINST THE GUARD YOU'RE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH. YOU THINK IT DON'T HELP BUT IT HELP ME GGET A BED AND TO SEE NURSE FOR MEDICINE.
Missy: STICK BY YOU'RE LOVED ONE INSIDE THOSE WALLS BECAUSE WITHOUT HELP FROM THE OUTSIDE THEY DONT HAVE ANYONE.AND ARE SUBJECT TO BEING MISTREATED.AND JAIL CAN OPEN YOU'RE EYE'S TO ALOT OF THINGS.
Josh: It is boring. If possible, have someone send you books. Books must be submitted in compliance with the rules.
Alex: Mind your business and cooperate with the guards and you should do fine. There are worse jails in worse towns you could wind up at. Boredom will probably be what does you in worst.
Gary: straighten up
Charlie: Don't try to look out for anyone but yourself, otherwise you could end up making more enemies, getting robbed, or getting hurt. Just do your own time and get through it.
Melissa: I would advise that they find out if the jail doctor approves of their medication. If not, I would try to get the medication situation figured out before going to jail. I personally have a general anxiety disorder and was upset that I was not informed that I wouldn't be allowed to take my prescribed medication that the jail doctor is suppose to have delivered from the pharmacy to the jail. I am also upset that I never received any substitute medication at all. I do not abuse medication, but I was a first time offender going into general population for the first time. I'm a white and thin female in my 20's. I'm from out of state, and I was pretty anxious. However, jail is not as intense as on TV. The people I was in jail with were college students, a medical assistant, a law school student, and I myself am a doctoral student. I wasn't with anyone who murdered someone, raped another individual, or did some intense criminal act (that I am aware of). I did not experience any racism while in there. I was friends with both the white and black females. I was closest to a black female. I didn't ever fear for my safety or fear that someone was going to be mean to me.
Harley: dont go. call someone too come and get u fast, if u cant do want u are ask too do stay away from fight and more , read a book
Billy: STAY AWAY FOR FIGHT DO WHAT THEY TILL U TOO DO, AND THEY GIVE U GOOD TIME IF YOUR GOOD , READ A BOOK AND GET SUM SLEEP .... BE GOOD
Jimmy: stay out of fight we will put money on your books too make store keep your hand and feet too yourself at all time do what u are told too do

JM: If somebody knows they will be serving time in this jail what is your advice to them?
Harry: Just do what's asked of you, and do not try to cheat the system. Just try to do your time, keep your head up, and pray to your higher power to give you strength. Make sure you get some exercise and try to eat. found keeping a journal helped me get through he hard times. I would act like I was writing someone on the outside, which you could do. But I did it for myself.
Qtip: just do what they say and get the hell out of there ;)
Hanna: Don't disrespect anyone in there. You are no better then anybody! Even if the guards are in a sour mood, don't be rude. Remember you are an inmate. Play a lot of cards, and listen to a lot of stories, there is a lot to learn in there. DONT listen to jail house lawyers!!! They all claim to know what is going to happen with your case!
DoneMyTime: Don't look at the time as punishment. View it as time out to get yourself organized and write to everyone including yourself. Your life look more real to you, when it is in words. Plan for short term and long term. Read the books they have in library..avoid sharing razors, and anything else with other inmates.. remember dry blood on shaving razors can transmit H.I.V, hepatitus, and other infectious diseases.... don't create more problems for yourself this is not your career or permanent home..
Linda: STAY THE HELL OUT OF JAIL. DON'T GIVE THEM THE PLEASURE OF SEEING YOU AGAINE.
Missy: LEARN FROM YOU'RE MISTAKES AND NEVER MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE TWICE.STAY TO YOURSELF AND KEEP PEOPLE OUT OF YOU'RE BUSINESS.OH AND DON'T LET PEOPLE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOU.
Josh: Stay out of trouble and try to alleviate to boredom with reading material. Many people are annoying, so resist temptation to argue or fight.
Chrissy: DONT GO BECAUSE ITS NOT CLEAN AND ITS NO WHERE FOR ANY ONE TO BE....
Gary: Go be an inmate worker. it passes the time.
Charlie: Don't try to look out for anyone but yourself, otherwise you could end up making more enemies, getting robbed, or getting hurt. Just do your own time and get through it.
Melissa: Basically it's just common sense. When you are the new inmate, just be nice to people, don't talk negatively about anyone, and I personally wouldn't isolate myself actually for the purpose of having people to talk to (I never felt I had to join a group or anything; there just isn't much to do in jail). If an inmate doesn't ask what you are charged with, don't ask them their charge. I also wouldn't ask personal information unless they tell you first. It's just "jail respect." Take the bunk you are assigned. Top bunks are for inmates that have been there longer than you. I was not in there that long, but it really was no where as bad as I had thought it would be. Jail is by no means glamorous, but it's not what you see on television. Do not stress yourself over it.
Harley: stay too there self, sleep ,read do your time stay out the way of fight ask for help if u need it dont, dont talk alot eat the food they give u ... dont make no friends u came in there by yourself and u leave by yourself..
Billy: KEEP YOUR HEAD UP STAY AWAY FROM FIGHT DO WHAT YOUR TOLD KNOW SMOKIN DO YOUR TIME AND U WILL BE OUT SOON WE WILL PUT MONEY ON THE PHONE SO U CAN CALL HOME
Jimmy: keep away from bad people that steal ,fights and do what u where told too do read a book get sum reast and stay too yourself thats all u have too do
