Pre-sentencing

Interview with Darrell

JM: Tell us about the pre-sentencing process:
Darrell: I was in the jail for about a year, going back and force to court for various reasons (To talk to my attorney, for a bond hearing, etc.). Most of my time there I was in a single cell (As apposed to a double cell) because of my past ciminal history. I had no TV, no library, and limited yard access. No visits, and the "store" was very limited.

JM: Did you have police stop by your house for questioning? If not please give us details on how you came to be arrested.
Darrell: No. I was driving through town (Carnesville) and was low on cash. I saw a home that appeared to be empty and broke in the door. I was in the home when someone came in. I left, got in my car and drove away. I was arrested several months later on a non-related charge.

JM: What was court like? Please give as many details as you recall.
Darrell: I had a court appointed attorney (A "public pretender".) who took one look at my past criminal history and all he wanted to do was reach a plea bargain. As I recall, we spoke very little about the actual crime I was accused of and more about how much time I was looking at if I didn't take the plea. (He was right.)

JM: What were your original charges? What did you end up being convicted of?
Darrell: 1 count of Burglary, non-residential. 1 count of Burglary, non-residential.
