Leisure Time

Interview with Trisha, Jared and Lucia

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Trisha: There are books, cards, and that's about it. That's the one thing that really sucks about that jail. You don't get a ball during rec time. You go out to the rec yard that is enclosed in concrete.
Jared: None there was nothing to do beside go upstairs. Play cards or read a book that's why people are so grumpy in there.they a rec. Area that was concrete and four walls that was it.I thoughtit was the dummest idea iI had ever saw but there is nothing in such as a facility
Lucia: there were facilities to help people with their addictions, (Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous) there was also bible study, and the always amazing OUTDOOR time for an hour a day weather permitting. the book cart was phenomenal for me and a lot of other inmates. once to twice weekly a deputy would come in and exchange the books.

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Trisha: They bring the book cart around once a week and its a pretty cheesy selection. If you didn't come in the jail as a romantic type you will leave as one because of the cheesy romance books you read.
Jared: Yea it was more like you just go with the flow can't just take the TV .unless you feel like fighting immediately. I didn't car over all I had to fight white people any way so I did what I wanted taught who I wanted and watched what I wanted. I don't like racist.
Lucia: the entertainment was not what i would call fierce. a lot of times the female inmates would yell at eachother a guess a weird way of asserting dominance in the most friendly way for convicted people. the book shelf was easy. people were a lot more lenient with that than with the television

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Trisha: No, I did push-ups and stuff.
Jared: No I'm a small petite guy and I do about three to five hundred pushups a day and I also did burpies which are like intense up downs
Lucia: i had the same weight but losing muscle mass was a definite. no running but walking was allowed. walking in circles that is.

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Trisha: I was in my cell 23 hours a day because I was high security.
Jared: We went outside maybe once a month or two to three if winter time. We only have our bodies for workout nothing anything else was a offense with the jail.
Lucia: aside form walking around the pod for exersize that was it. we were allowed outside for one hour a day (weather permitting) and we could walk sit and talk outside

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Trisha: They do but it is really horrible. If you are in north housing you meet with a pastor behind the glass. If you are in medium you get to go to a church service. That would be my second biggest complaint next to recreation.
Jared: They did allow and offer them once or twice a month . They were always held in office space ya know small areas.
Lucia: i never participated in the church services, but many other inmates did. a lot of people say they find god in jail or prison. they had two church esq.services a week.
