Inmates

Interview with John and Viola

JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't.
: No, I was the only one in jail.
Viola: Yes I did. There were quite a few bullies in which I now understand. Jail isn't a nice place and you can't look like a softie. You go in looking like a softie (like I did crying and carrying on) they swarm you and pick on you because your "weak"

JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates?
Viola: I stayed in bed most of the time and read. I let the other girls have run of the cell and I worked around their schedule. I always allowed them to have the remote and bathroom first. I kept quiet because I didn't want to be picked on anymore than they were already trying to do.

JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change?
Viola: No I didn't have a cell mate. there are two womens cells in ogle county. one has three bunks and the other one has four. you share the cell with whoever they put in. I had the same women the entire time and in the middle of the night a few times there were women brought in and almost immediately bonded out.
