Pre-sentencing

Interview with Mathew

JM: Tell us about the pre-sentencing process:
Mathew: I was in jail for contempt of court for not appearing for a child support hearing.

JM: Did you have police stop by your house for questioning? If not please give us details on how you came to be arrested.
Mathew: A warrant was issued for missing court on a child support matter. I turned myself in at the jail.

JM: What was court like? Please give as many details as you recall.
Mathew: I went to court the next day. I knew going in what was going to happen. They gave me 6 months in the jail for contempt of court. I didn't have a lawyer. I've been going to court over child support for years so I knew how it would go.

JM: What were your original charges? What did you end up being convicted of?
Mathew: I wasn't convicted of a crime. I just had contempt of court. I was supposed to be making payments and I avoided going to court that day because I knew they were going to put me in jail.
