Telephones

Interview with Mathew

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Mathew: In the 7 man cells they did, but with the 2 man cells they have phones you can use when you are out. A lot of times they would lock us down or put us back in our cells. We were supposed to be out of our cells for half the day, but we didn't really get out that much.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Mathew: You can only call collect, I think. I didn't really use the phone. They changed the phone service so you could only get a card through a certain company.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Mathew: See above.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Mathew: Yes I know they do. They also screen your incoming mail.
