Leisure Time

Interview with Lowell and Ray

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Lowell: We would go to the gym where you could play basketball. we also had the law library you could go to. Inmates would play cards or you could read books or the rec room had tv to watch. There isn't much else or you could talk on the phone to help pass time.
Ray: We had the rec room, play basektball, the library. THey would have movies on teh weekend we could watch. Read books, going outside to the yard. not much else, so if you weren't interesetd in this stuff, people could go crazy just sitting ther. also if your family couldn't pay for you to call them at home.

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Lowell: We would get to watch movies on a monthly basis. W also had cable. I didn't argue with anyone but yes there were other inmates argued about what they shoudl watch. I just went with the flow. I didn;t want to get into trouble for arguing about what movie or show to watch.
Ray: I never bothered with the tv or such. I ddint want to fight with anyone. I just went with the flow and watched what they did. I didn't htink it was worth it. we had cable but the inmates fough constantly about what to watch. i avoided whatever to not get into trouble.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Lowell: Yes sometimes If I worked out and didn;t have enough food to eat. I have diabetes and my sugar would go low and I wouldnt ahve anything to eat to bring my sugar back up if I ddint have extra food.
Ray: No we had free weighs we could use. or i just did pushup sit ups or jumping jacks. i did my own exercies

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Lowell: We could go outside everyday. you could walk the yard, play basketball. if you didnt go outside you coudl do push up and just jumpin jacks that kind of stuff for exercise.
Ray: Every day, it was either to play basketball, walk the yard. if you didnt go outside you could do liek push up sits up,etc in your cell. not much else to do or use weights.

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Lowell: Yes they did but I didnt' attend so I am not sure when they had them or anything about them.
Ray: Yes they did but I chose not to go. I am not very religious so never went> i also didnt know times or days.
