Leisure Time

Interview with Ashley

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Ashley: There were none on the women's side. We could go outside during you allocated time. I had to attend classes during the day, during the week. Beside the religious groups, there was no where to go. To do anything...maybe in the dayroom youc n watch tv at nightor places to could be to keep busy.

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Ashley: The only entertainment was when the religious groups came in. There were no programs, no entertainment at all. The had the book form you could fill out but you never count on getting the books even though you ordered them.I guess we did have the tv to watch at night.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Ashley: The only thing wecould do is walk a little track when we could go outside when weather permitted. There was no place to stay in shape.

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Ashley: We could go outside everyday for about an hour, weather permitted. If we could not get outside there was no place to get exercise or to keep in shape.

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Ashley: They had religious programs come in but church was not offered unless it was a special thing and that happened maybe three times i was there.
