Inmates

Interview with John, Scott, Aaron, Bruce, Sammy and Janice

JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't.
John: I didnt find it hard to get along with other inmates because i knew alot of people from outside of the jail. I know what it takes to have someone want conflict with another so i just stay to myself or with people i know.
Scott: NO IT WASNT HARD TO GET ALONG I JUST STAYED RESPECTFUL LIKE I ALWAYS AM AND I WAS OK. THE LET IS RESPECT AND MINDING YOUR BUISNESS. DO THAT AND YOUR FINE.
Aaron: I thought most of them were pretty easy to get along. there were two inmates that helped me the most while I was staying at the Worcester house of corrections.
Bruce: At first I just sat back and observed my surrounding and how everyone was Moving. I noticed that we are all men. Of course we didn't wanna be there but its all about respect. As long as you respect the next man everything is okay.
Sammy: No it was not difficult for me to get along with others. I know alot of people so when I first got there I just chilled with them. Most people knew of me and my reputation so they didnt disrespect me.
Janice: Yes it's extremely hard. There are every type of person possible there and you have to learn to adapt and accept and keep your mouth shut or fight. Personally I kept mouth shut because I was pregnant and refused to put an innocent child in harms way. There was a time when a black girl found out I was having a black baby and absolutely flipped because I'm white and I had to have my cell changed

JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates?
John: I had to mainly just stay to myself mostly. I alzó had to respext the next man and what he is about. I had to focus on me and what i was there for and not get involved with the jail house entertainment. I read alot and worked out alot.
Scott: I JUST MAINLY WORKED OUT ,I DIDNT TALK TO MANY PEOPLE,I DIDNT TALK MUCH, I WAS RESPECTFUL TO OTHERS WHEN I DID TALK. I LIKE TO WATCH CERTAIN SHOWS SO I WATCHED SOME TV. I MAINLY WAS ON THE PHONE GETTING A VISIT OR JUST KEEPING TO MYSELF. THATS IT.
Aaron: I had to stay in my cell to avoid getting into fights with the inmates I was kind of scary because I didn't want to get labeled as a snitch and the guards never really saw what went on there because when the cells are open that is where most of the fights happen.
Bruce: At first I just stayed to myself. When I ran into people I knew from the outside we would hang out. I just mainly stayed humble. I kept to myself and respected others. I wrote alot of letters to my people outside the walls,I tried reading alot of books and magazines
Sammy: I mainly avoided problems by reading books, going to the gym when it was available to us,I would run laps in the yard. I also spent alot of time going to my good time program or school. When I wasn't doing any of that I ate or watched a little television.
Janice: You really just have to stay to yourself and not share too much about your personal life or how you feel about others and there opinions... Cause let's be real once you leave jail those people don't matter anymore! I did a lot of reading and writing and sleeping as well

JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change?
John: I had a single cell so i didnt get a roomate ,so basically my roomates never changed because i didnt ever have one. It was just me . Its better like that.
Scott: NO YOU GET ASSIGNED A ROOMATE AND WHEN HE LEAVES THE BLOCK THAT IS WHEN YOU GET ANOTHER ROOMATE. IT COULD BE A CHANGE EVERY MONTH OR A FEW MONTHS.
Aaron: I was not able to choose because in maxi-c theuy were single cells. then the jail decided to put two inmates in a single cell then everything became more hostile.
Bruce: No I was not able to choose the roommate that I wanted. But luckily most of the roommates that I had,we're,very understandable, respectful and kool. You could get a new roommate at any time because the blocks were always switching over and people we're always getting moved around.
Sammy: No in that facility we were not able to choose our roommate, but if you were lucky you got a new roommate maybe once a,month. It all depended on the movement of the jail.
Janice: You could put in a request to make a cell change but they didn't have to do it if they didn't want to. When ou first arrive you're moved around a lot but once you're sentenced you pretty much stay where you are
