Pre-sentencing

Interview with John, Scott, Aaron, Bruce, Sammy and Janice

JM: Tell us about the pre-sentencing process:
John: They had me on a maximum security block basically for my WHOLE sentence. That block was mainly consisting of people with really serious crimes such as murder and drugs.they fed us three square meals a day. We were allowed 3-6 hours out of our cells on a regular day,but there were plenty of occurances wich caused the blocks to be locked down thus keeping us locked in our cells for the whole day.
Scott: IT WAS A LONG TEDIOUS PROCESS. WE WERE ON A BLOCK WITH A BUNCH OF OTHER MEN WHO COULDNT MAKE BAIL OR WERE WAITING TO GET SENTENCED. WE HAD VISITS,CHURCH,GYM,AND THAT WAS IT . WE SPENT MOST OF OUR TIME LOCKED AWAY IN OUR ROOMS OR WATCHING TV WHEN WE COULDNT LEAVE THE UNIT.
Aaron: it was a little nerve racking at first. the COs tend to abuse there power. like if the CO didn't like what you were doing they would scream at you and treat you like shit. yes we go there because we broke the law but it doesn't mean they can treat us like shit.
Bruce: The pre-sentencing process consisted alot of lawyer visits and trying to either get bail or figure out how much of a sentence you were looking at. The tension on the housing unit it tense and the phones are always occupied by someone or there broken. On these blocks your pretty much just waiting.
Sammy: We were taken to jail, awaiting trial we had access to our lawyer and we got visits from Family. It sucked sitting around waiting to get a bail reduction or awaiting my sentence. The food was bad and they wake you up at 600 a.m when you have court. It sucks
Janice: I was incarcerated for 2 months before I was sentenced. I was held in a cell with 8 other girls. I went back and forth to court 4 times before I was sentenced. I cried a lot and did not get much sleep. There is noting but time on your hands to think

JM: Did you have police stop by your house for questioning? If not please give us details on how you came to be arrested.
John: I was arrested because the police had been Looking for me. They had stopped by my current address at that time and i wasnt there so they watched the home and i ended up showing up. As i was leaving and getting into my ride they pulled the vehicle over and arrested me.
Scott: I VIOLATED MY PROBATION SO WHEN I WENT TO COURT THEY GAVE ME A JAIL SENTENCE AND I SERVED IT OUT MINUS THE LITTLE BIT OF GOOD TIME THEY GAVE US. IF I NEVER VIOLATED MY PROBATION I WOULD'VE BEEN OK BUT THATS HOW IT GOES SOMETIMES. YOU CAN ONLY DO SO MUCH BEING A FELON.
Aaron: I was on the run for about a year then the police decided to stop me because I was acting "suspicious" and they discovered I had two warrants out for my arrest that is how I came to stay at the Worcester house of corrections. that is also how I got arrested.
Bruce: The police did not come by my house for questions,I was arrested by own action and stupidity. I was standing around with a firearm on me and I shouldn't have been. I guess someone had made a complaint in the neighborhood, the cops came to check it out seen a few kids searched us and I got arrested.
Sammy: No they didn't stop by my house I arrested for selling drugs on a corner street. I was standing around and the cops ran up on Me and hand cuffed me. They said I was a known drug dealer. They searched and found drugs on me after I was in handcuffs.
Janice: My house was raided in spencer ma by the spencer police dept and police from the surrounding towns. They found 7 grams of crack cocaine in a safe as well as over 100 baggies a scale a razor multiple social security deposit and Ebt cards. I was already on probation for another case for possession of crack cocaine so my bail was revoked on that case and 1500 for the second one

JM: What was court like? Please give as many details as you recall.
John: Court was hell, they brought me to court it seemed like whenever they felt fit because on times of my scheduled dates sometimes i didnt even get brought to court. The times i did i spent mostly downstairs Waiting to see my lawyer and the judge. My lawyer rarely ever came down to see me. The little sandwich they give you with the little carton of milk is rediculas and bogus, the sandwich didnt even have enough meat to get a toddler full.
Scott: COURT WAS A LONG,SLOW,BORING,SOMETIMES WORTHLESS TRIP. THEY HAD US CHAINED TO OTHER MEN WHEN THEY TRANSPORTED US THERE. THEN WE ARE PILLED IN A HOLDING CELL AND WAIT FOR FOR COURT TO START SO WE CAN GET CALLED TO GO INFRONT OF THE JUDGE. IF YOUR LUCKY THO YOU WILL SEE THE JUDGE,SOMETIMES YOU DONT AND THEY TALES YOU BACK TO THE JAIL.
Aaron: court was boring which it should be but the guards there just look at you like you are just common scum they don't help you and they ignore you when you try to get there attention they don't even show you respect they think that just because you broke the law they can disrespect you
Bruce: Court was a scary process because I did not know was goung to happen to me. I knew I had broken the law and that I should be punished but I was UN aware of what was going to really happen until I kept speaking with my lawyer. He help me to better understand.
Sammy: Court was a very bad process. They wake you up early in the morning, give you a regular breakfast in a styrofoam tray. Make you take a shower. Then ship you to the main jail where you wait for the van to pick you up for court. Then you get to court and wait to see the judge for hours.
Janice: Before court they bring you downstairs and put you in a cell with all the other girls waiting for court for about 2 hours. Then when your van arrives you are shackled( in my case only hand cuffed because I was pregnant) and ride in the van for a few more hours. When you arrive you are placed in a cell with a wooden or metal slab they call a bed and a toilet where you stay for about 8 hours and spend about 2 mins actually in the courtroom. Needless to say its extremely stressful. You're lawyer will come chat with u if u have one for about 5 mins before you go in the courtroom. You get a sandwich for lunch that barely fills your stomach and a kid sized beverage.

JM: What were your original charges? What did you end up being convicted of?
John: Aggravated assault with a fire arm, possesion of ammunition. I ended up being convicted of both charges.
Scott: POSSESION. I VIOLATED MY PROBATION AND GOT CONVICTED OF IT AND HAD TO SERVE MY REMAINDER TIME.
Aaron: I was convicted of breaking and entering in the night time and larceny of $200.00
Bruce: My charge was possesion of a handgun,I was convicted of it.
Sammy: Possession of an illegal substance, yes I was convicted
Janice: My original charges were possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute and that's what I was convicted of
