Inmates

Interview with Dale

JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't.
Dale: No I did not. After arriving to prison(on my 22nd birthday) I generally kept to myself. Eventually, other prisoners started to talk to me and ask if I wanted to play cards, basketball, chess, etc. These were mostly older guys whom had been incarcerated for a number of years and were close to being released. There were also some individuals there that were serving life sentences and had nothing to look forward to other than prison life.

JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates?
Dale: #1 rule is to "Mind Your Own Business!" If you can do that, for the most part your problems will be minimal. Recreation is ok if you feel comfortable with the other individuals involved, but I witnessed numerous incidents extending from arguments about a basketball game or a card game. Only engage in what you feel comfortable doing.

JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change?
Dale: I did not get to choose my cellmate..at any of the facilities. They assign you to where ever there is a available bed. On occasion though, if you knew someone in another cell and there was an opening, the counselor may approve a cell change. Depends on the circumstances I guess.
