Leisure Time

Interview with Girliegirl, Paul, Tyler, Tom, Ryan, Zach and Pat

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Girliegirl: books were passed around, food, arts and crafts, you could learn how to do different things like plant flowers, do nails or stuff like that.
Paul: books, tv, card games, talking to the gaurd, going outside in the courtyard.
Tyler: Poor book selection (they need books donated badly) TVs in the day room People played cards and dominoes (both available from the commissary.
Tom: there was cards and chess and checkers they have books and you can buy crosswords and from time to time they would open the yard and inmates can play volleyball or just walk around the yard other and you can watch t.v. or listen to the radio and thats it.
Ryan: There was nothing provides, other than a television, that was in front of each 10 man living quarters. anything outside of that like cards, chess board, were bought through the jails commisary. and paid for by the inmates if they wanted to have other things such as that for theirselves.
Zach: haha... Facilities. Negative on facilities. Inmates were pretty much left on their own to pass time. We gambled, watched tv, wrote letters... Pretty much emulated the boring parts of war.
Pat: Ha...nothing really. They took us to the gym a few times while they went through our cells

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Girliegirl: Entertainment? There was a movie once a month and it was usually 20 years old.
Paul: had regular access
Tyler: regular access.
Tom: there was 4 tv's so no one really cared about it but if a game was on the majority rules and if not the officers would cut them off and make everyone get on their bunks until the game was over or until lock down what ever came first so.
Ryan: Everyone was pretty civil about it. if someone wanted to get ibn on a cardgame, turns were taken after a team, or player would loose. and as far as the televisions would go, all of the inmates that were housed together would agree on what to watch. and everyone would get to watch at least a few show of their choosing.
Zach: Our particular cell got one channel on the television. Nobody fought over what to watch.
Pat: T.V. available at times. Really could not hear it though.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Girliegirl: Yes, the food was all carbs and made us tired and lazy.
Paul: nope wasnt in there long and i did 100 sit up and push up a day.
Tyler: No, lots of time to walk around the yard or inside around the day room. Lot's of time for push ups and/or sit ups, etc.
Tom: yes no working out at all only thing you could do is walk around the large room as many time as you like.
Ryan: They don't allow you to workout while locked up. And they don't provide you with anything that you need in order to keep in shape. but there are still other ways to get around that and workout still. like calastetics.
Zach: negative. Myself and another inmate worked out on a regular schedule.
Pat: No, I lost weight because the food was terrible. I also walked a lot in the day room.

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Girliegirl: one hour a day after lunch.
Paul: whenever the door was unlocked for the courtyard.
Tyler: Everyday the yard was open from around 9am to dark unless there was bad weather.
Tom: maybe once a week if that and if it was winter not at all just walk around that was it nothing else to do.so uh
Ryan: we wern't allowed outside at all. but once, or twice a week we were allowed to go in groups to the gym. and there we would get to play basketball for an hour.
Zach: Never.
Pat: We went outside periodically. You could play cards out there, read or just sit.

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Girliegirl: They offered services but I never went.
Paul: they offered them but I didn't attend them.
Tyler: Yes, church service on Sunday morning as well as a bible study class Sunday afternoon.
Tom: yes i never went to church but they held church on sunday and i heard it was really nice. so
Ryan: They were offered in OCJ. I did not go though. they were held regularly. once a week, or every other week.
Zach: Yes, the jail offered several church services, which I am thankful for. I attended a Catholic service weekly, and it was held by a catholic priest.
