Telephones

Interview with Adam

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Adam: When the other inmates weren't hogging them, sure.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Adam: Probably close to $20 if they were kucky enough to have someone on the outside who was able to afford to send them money for phone calls and luckier still if they had that plus money for smokes and/or food. Otherwise you could earn upto $10/month. Usually it was only $5/month.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Adam: Not where I was. It was something you had on your account, then would purchase thriugh a kiosk in the cafeteria area.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Adam: Of course. But you never knew when, how often or for what specific purpose.
