Clothing

Interview with Fred, Alfred and Darryl

JM: What clothes could you have brought in to wear in the jail (underwear, socks, etc.)?
Fred: They gave us a orange jumpsuit.
Alfred: Underear and socks, with some change is all we were allowed to wear. White t-shirts, socks and underwear.
Darryl: The only thing of your own that you could keep were your socks and underwear

JM: If you had a set uniform, what did it look like? Please be specific about each piece of clothing issued to you.
Fred: It was just the jumpsuit.
Alfred: Slippers, slip on type, blue in color. Orange jumpsuits. We were issued 2 of them. Laundry was once a week. No hats or coats at that time
Darryl: They would issue you an orange jumpsuit and a pair of shoes. If you wanted extra underwear and socks you had to buy it from the commissary

JM: Were there any assigned clothes in high demand that an inmate should look for when getting clothing assigned?
Fred: No. You couldn't get anything extra like that.
Alfred: There was nothing that I could remeber. The trustees had the say who got what.
Darryl: I would say try to get as many jumpsuits as possible

JM: Was the clothing different between men and women?
Fred: They had the jumpsuit too but their's was a green one.
Alfred: They had the same color and clothing we did.
Darryl: I do not know anything about the women's side. they were totally separate.
