Inmates

Interview with Fred, Alfred and Darryl

JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't.
Fred: I got along with them pretty good. There wasn't any trouble.
Alfred: I keep to myself, and watched. I had no problems with the other inmates. Thet all had some things going down, some coming off drug highs. MOst were ok, and didn't bother me.
Darryl: It was difficult to get along with other inmates. It is basically every man for themselves. You can not trust anyone. They will steal anything they can from you if your not watching.

JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates?
Fred: There was no big problems.
Alfred: I stayed to myself in the beginning, watched what was going on, and learned by observing, listening and talking with out comment or statement. I made no judgement calland just hung by myself till I was reasonably sure who I could talk to and not. There was a define system that was observed and I watched tosee how it operated.
Darryl: I had to keep to myself and not say a word to anyone else. If someone wanted something you had like food you just had to give it to them to avoid a fight. You really don't know who you are dealing with so it easier to just avoid trouble.

JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change?
Fred: No. They didn't let you do anything like that.
Alfred: I only had one the time I was there and was very lucky to have him. He let me see the way things happened and I was shown by him how things ran in there.
Darryl: You could not choose an inmate as your cell mate, you had to take whatever you got. I had a different cellmate about every week for the first few weeks.
