Inmates

Interview with Clayton, Darryl and Kristofer

JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't.
Clayton: i did not find it difficult to get along with the other inmates because i mind my business and leave others alone
Darryl: I did ok in this situation . You have to adapt , overcome or jail will be more unpleasant than it has to be . I kept my mouth shut and kept to myself . read read read . I also was a math tutor in the GED classes .. mostly all gang bangers trying to get their GED . They were all pretty cool for the most part .
Kristofer: yes and no. Some of the other inmates i knew from the outside, so we were cool. Some i knew from the outside and because of that we weren't cool with each other. so i just stuck with friends and avoided the guys who weren't

JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates?
Clayton: all i had to do was sit by myself and not speak to anyone
Darryl: Just as you would anywhere . Show respect . Treat people the way you want to be treated . Dont talk shit. I read book after book . I helped younger kids with there GED work . I went to groups , NA/AA meetings . I never got into a fight . I never even had harsh words . Its how you carry yourself .
Kristofer: to avoid problems or fights i would hang out with other gangs, guys i knew from the outside anyway, but didn't roll with. I had to do some dirty work for them to earn their protection, but by doing so, i made sure i wasn't an easy target for some of the other gangs.

JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change?
Clayton: no, they assign you to a cellmate, its not a choice. While i was there i only had one cellmate.
Darryl: The only time I had a cellmate was in 72 hour quarantine . Your are locked up 23 hours a day so they can watch you . Then it was a large room with bunk beds around the walls like a big summer camp . Then it was like a large multi floor dorm . Jail is a revolving door . people cam and went all the time
Kristofer: No, i was assigned a cell mate. The only time cell mates would change would be if one guy got sent to the hole. or if one guy got released or transferd to another building/block.
