Telephones

Interview with Hakstiff and Rebecca

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Hakstiff: NO IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHEN THEY DECIDE TO TURN THEM ON
Rebecca: Yes, we did, but our loved ones had to pay a fee to speak to us.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Hakstiff: U HAVE TO HAVE THEIR NUMBER ON A LIST AND SUBMIT IT TO ADMINISTRATION AND GET IT APPROVED
Rebecca: I believe it was a 50 dollar fee. I'm not sure how many times or minutes you were able to use on it. I can only imagine other inmates spending over 100 per week just to use the phone.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Hakstiff: IN SOME PRISONS
Rebecca: Some people had family bring them phone cards.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Hakstiff: YES
Rebecca: Yes, they do. Always, just to be safe.
