Telephones

Interview with Sparkie, Craig and Allison

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Sparkie: yes
Craig: Yes. My wife set up an account so I could call out when I wanted.
Allison: Regular as in scheduled times. Sometimes there were more people needing to use the phones the were available. Sometimes individual phones did not work.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Sparkie: had to set up account to call anyone about .35 min, and calling cards where $22.00 for $20 card lasted about 10 calls depending on where you called
Craig: Not sure how the phone charges worked. I know i made about 8-9 calls a couple minutes each and I spent about $25.00 dollars on calls.
Allison: All globel tellink. My family put money on an account from home so I am not sure how much it was. I know it was expensive and minutes went very quickly. You were able to buy a phone card on commissary or call collect as well.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Sparkie: yes
Craig: You can buy a phone card from the comissary.
Allison: Collect calls were an option. or family could buy time on their home phone.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Sparkie: yes
Craig: yes.
Allison: Yes, there was a recording that said they did.
