Leisure Time

Interview with Helen and Leon

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Helen: There weren't any facilities available to me other than my cell and to watch TV. I don't know of any facilities to other inmate but I was only there a few days. I never saw another inmate leave the block for anything other than seeing a doctor and coming right back.
Leon: There is a weight room and an outdoor rec yard with a basketball court and a pull-up bar. You get an hour of rec every day and you can choose one or the other. You can even split your time between the two.

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Helen: There was access to a tv but I wasn't able to watch what I wanted to. There seemed to be favorites that always were able to change the station when they didn't want to watch what was on. I was tired of watching Jerry Springer and Maury all the time.
Leon: Nobody really fought over the TV. Majority ruled. There weren't many good channels anyway.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Helen: I didn't have a hard time staying in shape while I was in jail. I didn't eat that much so I didn't gain any weight while I was there.
Leon: Not really, the weight room was ok and as long as I wasn't feeling too lazy I would usually go there.

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Helen: I never went outside because I was released a day after my tb results came back. I just sat in my cell any only came out for maybe a few hours a day.
Leon: We could go outside as long as it wasn't wet. There are two basketballs and a hand-ball. If we couldn't go outside then the only other option was the weight room.

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Helen: I don't know if the jail offered church services. No one ever mentioned having one and I never seen one.
Leon: There was church service every sunday and bible study on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. You had to sign up for it in advance.
