Leisure Time

Interview with Tom

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Tom: They had a work out room but it was just a half court and two TVs and decks of cards. No weights allowed but there's a workout machine in trustee pod.

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Tom: First thing in the morning it would be whoever got to a TV first. It would be that there was a TV for the whites and the blacks. You could wander over in between if you knew somebody but it was pretty much separate.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Tom: I had a hard time keeping weight on. I think I lost twenty pounds in those four months.

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Tom: Never got outside. Only you got outside is if you went to court.

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Tom: Yes they did. There was service every Sunday for like an hour. I didn't go.. but I went to the AA meetings just to get out of the pod.
