Inmates

Interview with Sam

JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't.
Sam: Not at all. I walked in, put down my own personal ground rules and that was it. most in there just want to do theur time and get out. In my dorm we all got a long mostly..a couple of scuffles. I even had one where I smacked a bully with my sneaker. fight didnt last long and no one was punished for it. We shared the bathroom by ging privacy when taking showers so you never had to take one with another person. we played chess and cards and to the most part shared the TV...some how I managesd to dominate the TV and what was watched...not really sure how it happened but it did. I had a lot of respect from my cell mates..

JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates?
Sam: To avoid problems..easy. leave ego at door. Talk and give everyone else respect. mind your business. and just do your time. rule number one to me was "I'm not better than anyone else in there. we were all a number in an orange jumps suit" Thinkof it like sleep away camp and make the most of it....stay away from trouble.

JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change?
Sam: No. I was in a dorm with 14 other people. no chose..it just was what it was. They did ask me if I would rather be in a 2 man cell...I said no.
