Leisure Time

Interview with Kaylie, Alfredo and Rosa

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Kaylie: They had a TV and we could watch Lifetime. You could also read if you wanted or just sit around and talk. That was about it.
Alfredo: High Point Detention Center is on 21 hour lock down and they only give you 3 hours out 1 in the morning, afternoon, and evening. They only offer church, anger management, and a few substance abuse classes. The one good thing about the classes are that they're all Christian based.
Rosa: ther ewaa nothing to pass time, you could read books if you coul get your hands on them. tjere were alot of romance books and bibles bu that was it. You coul make playing cards out o your milk containers and draw the car on there but that was about it

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Kaylie: No. It wasn't bad like that.
Alfredo: There is one television and from what I saw the guards change the channel for the first person that ask, or depending on there mood or if a game is on it's up to their discretion. Other than that you can do push ups or you can read a book.
Rosa: no just a television an certain long termers ran that and if you did say any thing they would give you a very hard time. there was no entertainment such as board games or any other type of entertainment. they did offer narcotics annonymous classes to those that wanted to go

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Kaylie: I didn't really eat so I lost a lot of weight which I was kinda glad about.
Alfredo: No, there's really nothing to do but work out, read and work out some more. Some of the inmates make water bags so we could lift weights.
Rosa: good yes all you could do was walk up and down a room, they had an exercise bike that was broke

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Kaylie: We never went outside.
Alfredo: You can't go outside so I had 20 different kinds of push ups that I did to keep my self occupied. I also did dips, squats, pull ups on the steps (when the guards weren't looking) and shadow boxing.
Rosa: never they said the facility was not capable to take us out nor was there any where secure for us to go to if we oul

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Kaylie: They did have services but I didn't go to them.
Alfredo: The jail did offer some really good church services that were held in the so called day room area. I actually go to church with one of the volunteers now.
Rosa: yes on sunday and wednesdays but you just sat in the hall it was terrible there were no chairs to sit on
