Telephones

Interview with Mary, D Bo, Joel and Trevor

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Mary: as long as we purchased a calling card, we could use the phone before 10pm everyday. otherwise we would have to call collect and it would cost our family a ton of money.
D Bo: NO
Joel: Yes, but if you do not know anyone that accepts collect calls, they're useless.
Trevor: yes, but at an exorbitant fee.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Mary: to call collect it was like a 7 dollar connection charge, along with 1.30 minute charged after that. On a calling card, it was like 20 dollars for 30 mins I think.
D Bo: $100
Joel: Local calls only costed a little more than a dollar. But you only get like ten minutes
Trevor: I rarely called anyone but I would guess around 50 dollars a week on average

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Mary: No. you could also call out collect.
D Bo: NO
Joel: Yes, but only if you wanna call out of state
Trevor: phone cards were not available

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Mary: Yes, they did. they mentioned in the beginning that all the calls were recorded.
D Bo: YES
Joel: Yes, they can screen all the calls they want to.
Trevor: yes they screened your calls
