Pre-sentencing

Interview with Milles, Preston, Lauren, Rosa and Dallas

JM: Tell us about the pre-sentencing process:
Milles: after i was charged i was taken to the intake part of the jail. it was here that i was booked (info taken property logged)and was held until my arraignment. at my arraignment, i was taken to a room where there was a closed circuit tv. i was told not to talk just to listen. i felt very helpless because i could not talk or say my side of things. i just had to sit and take whatever the judge had to say.
Preston: I spent 90-days in a small jail cell meant for one with another inmate .Then I spent 6-months waiting for trial on an armed robbery. I spent most of the time in segregation during the 6-month stay waiting for trial. That whole time I was destructive and violent toward correctional guards.
Lauren: I was in the county jail two and a half months before signing my plea bargain. I Was first offered a 3-5 year sentences which i declined, then an 18 month sentence which i also declined, and finally a 14 month Sentence which i signed. The next morning i was transferred to prison.
Rosa: Pre-sentencing process was I was arrested, finger printed, photo taken, categorized, released, give a court date, and at the first court date they read Me the charges, and at the next court date they presented me with a deal and after taking the deal I was then sentenced and taken in to custody.
Dallas: I was taken to jail, and then I had a court appearance the next day, and they read the charges, and I went back to jail, not released because I was also on parole, and this was a parole violation. I waited about a week or so for the next court date, at which time they approached me with a plea bargain and gave me another court date. In two weeks, I accepted the plea agreement.

JM: Did you have police stop by your house for questioning? If not please give us details on how you came to be arrested.
Milles: yes, the police did come. they came initially to speak with me and ask me questions. they left after the first set of questions. they returned later with a warrant for my arrest where they proceeded to read me my rights and arrest me. there were two police cars and three police men. i thought that was a bit overkill.
Preston: Yes, police came to my house with guns. I was Portland's most wanted due to the nature of crime that I committed. Plus, I wanted to be murdered by police at that time in my life. So, I wanted to do cop side which is suicide by cop and it put fear in police to shoot to kill.
Lauren: I was secretly under investigation for 6 months and then the fni and regional tsk forve, and gresham police kicked in my front door and after searching my home and another home where they Located the drugs, my ex boyfriend, Roommate, and i were taken into custody and taken to jail.
Rosa: No, the police did not stop by my house for questioning. I was arrested on site after an alleged crime had been committed after which time they read me my rights, and never questioned me, I was just sent to jail boomed and processed after that there was no questioning involved.
Dallas: A crime was committed, police came to the site of the crime, and arrested me at the place of the crime. They didn't question me when I was arrested. I wasn't questioned at all. There wasn't an investigation, so there wasn't any questioning needed for this particular offense at this time.

JM: What was court like? Please give as many details as you recall.
Milles: my court appearance was very nerve racking. i was very nervous and a bit embarrassed. i walked into the court and there was a whole bunch of people waiting for their turn to make their plea. i had a very short meeting with my lawyer. when court began session i sat and waited to hear my name called. when i was called i stood up walked to the front. the judge read what i was charged with and asked the da for what information they had on the case. then the judge looked to me to state my plea. i had plead guilty, so the judge decided to accept my plea and found me guilty . from here i was taken to a holding cell in the courthouse and told to wait for transport to the jail.
Preston: The court was a very intimidating and they belittled and coerced me into a plea deal which I wish that I could take back. My attorney threated me to take the plea deal for a total of 160- months, and if I didn't, there would be added charges that I didn't do- which sucked. I had three judge conference meetings with JUDGE FRANZ
Lauren: I don't remember too much but i had court in person twice and video court once or twice. When i attempted to get a release hearing the district attorney for the state Argued i were released i would flea the country.that i would be a flight risk and successfully had my bail amount raised for fear that is
Rosa: Court was fast once you got called up. There was a lot of waiting to be called, and the district attorney read the charges Against me and read the deal we had agreed to. The attorney advised what my plea was and the judge made sure I knew my rights and accepted my plea
Dallas: I waited for what seemed like all day for my name to be called at arraignment, and that took hours. I was read my charges, and then quickly dismissed. The second court date, I was given another court date after hours of waiting again, and the third court date there was more waiting and then I accepted the deal.

JM: What were your original charges? What did you end up being convicted of?
Preston: My first 90-days were for a violation of a restraining order.. Than my second term which was 6-months I was being held on 5-counts of 1 degree arm robbery. I was convicted on two 1-degree robberies ran concurrently and one 2-degree robbery ran consecutively
Lauren: My original charges were posession of cocaine, posession of meth, delivery of cocaine, and delivery of meth. O was convicted of delivery of meth in substantial quantities.
Rosa: My original garage was a theft I and I was convicted of such.
Dallas: Original charges were robbery, and I was convicted of theft.
