Telephones

Interview with Chris

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Chris: Yes, in both the new jail and the work release facility we had phones we could use anytime during the hours of like 7am or 8am until 11pm or 12am.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Chris: At first you was only allowed to call collect which was a higher collect call charge than being on the street and calling someone collect. Then they started selling phone cards right before I got out, I never even bothered to buy one cause I was to close to getting out to buy it.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Chris: You didn't have to unless you wanted to call without the person you was calling having to pay the collect call charges.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Chris: As far as I know yes they did. I do know that all the calls were recorded, or at least that is what they told us.
