Inmates

Interview with Tommy

JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't.
Tommy: It wasn't that difficult to get along with other inmates. People were generally friendly as long as you didn't out right antagonize them. When you got to your actual cell block there were card games that could get heated if somebody tried to cheat, but in general everyone was focused too much on their case or trying to kill time to bother with arguments or fights.

JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates?
Tommy: I just kept my head down and was civil with everyone. I didn't play cards or bother with trading commissary items to avoid any disputes. I never used the phone twice in a row so other people could have a chance to use it during the limited free time, and every one was generally cool with me.

JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change?
Tommy: You're assigned a cellmate, you aren't allowed to choose one. Your cellmate usually only changes when they are released, so there's no real average time on how long you have the same one. It just depends on how far into their sentence they are.
