Inmates

Interview with Lou and Cindy

JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't.
Lou: On occasion, once and a while there was some loud mouth who wanted to stir up trouble. There's always sombody who is loud and obnoxious and keeps everyone up. It never fails in jails.
Cindy: Everyone was very friendly. As long as I was nice they were nice. There was one fight while I was there, but for the majority of my time in jail I was by myself in the SHU, where they held people who didn't act right.

JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates?
Lou: You just keep to yourself. You lay low. You can conversate with people but try not to be too cocky with your words.
Cindy: I held my opinion back sometimes in order to keep the peace, but really I was shy, and they were friendly, and I could've made some friends if I'd just been in there longer. If someone had an attitude I'd just leave them alone to give them time to cool down. All in all everyone was very happy in the jail.

JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change?
Lou: That's one thing you don't get to do.
Cindy: No, you didn't get to choose your cellmate. You got put where they sent you. Your cellmates would leave once their time was up, or if a cellmate had a problem then they might get moved.
