Life On The Inside
As anyone who has had the distinction of spending time in a Texas jail will tell you, this isn't a trip to Disneyland. In fact, it can be downright grim. The Ector County Jail has a housing capacity of 667 inmates. The dominate inmate population ethnicity appears to be Hispanic. This could mean a non-Hispanic inmate might find more challenges with dealing with his fellow inmates.

Passing the Time in Ector County Jail
There is a television that is controlled by the dominate factions in the pods. There are no other games allowed. According to a former inmate there is also no outdoor time provided to inmates or any type of church services.

If you want to send an inmate a book or magazine that have to be of a "non-explicit nature." The only way to send these inmates material is by ordering them through a place like Amazon and have them shipped directly to the jail.

As for clothing items, the only articles allowed for an inmate are the underwear, socks, thermals or T-shirts they can buy through the commissary. They are not allowed to receive any items from the outside. If they have special clothing or shoes for a court appearance, these will be held in the inmate's personal property locker away from his cell. There are absolutely no jewelry or watches allowed.

When it comes to receiving prescription medications, a staff nurse will bring those meds to an inmate. However, a former inmate claimed he was never given his prescription while incarcerated.

Good Behavior Policy
Texas State policy for good-conduct time allows for inmates who follow the rules and complete education programs or work assignments to earn a reduction in their sentences. These reductions are reserved for those inmates who are not serving for violent or sex offenses. The range of good-time can be anywhere between 10 to 15 days per every 30 depending on the circumstances.

Visitor and Phone Policy
Visitation time at Ector County Jail is on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday. There is a morning and afternoon session. Each visitation will last only 20 minutes unless you have traveled at least 100 miles. Then you will be given an additional 10 minutes of visiting time. There can only be two adults visiting per session. Anymore visitors and the time will have to be split.

An inmate can use the phones in their housing units from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm every day. These are for collect calls only.
