Leisure Time

Interview with Bert

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Bert: They had board games like chess and checkers. They also had lots of books that were kinda worn out and torn up but you could still read them. And the TV.

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Bert: There was no competition for anything like that. I think if guys got into fights or started up it wasn't over things like a chess game.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Bert: Well, no, because it was large area to move around in so I kept up just being as active as I could. They didn't have weights or anything like that so you were kinda on your own.

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Bert: I heard it was once a week but I wasn't there long enough to get outside.

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Bert: Yes they did. I remember reading a book and you can make a request a week early to go to church services.
